All the characters in the game refer to the protagonist as "they" or "them" presumably because they don't know either. It's intentionally ambiguous, yeah. Whether that means it's the character is gender-neutral, gender fluid, or just plain ambiguous is up to you, but there's never any specific clarification either way. Frisk is agender. That means that they don't identify as either.
I've received this question many of times by friends, family, or even random Undertale fans. Well, there's a simple reasoning for that. Chara was given that specific look by the artists of the game. Now, I know Chara sounds like a girl's name and both Frisk and Chara look like girls. I get what you guys are thinking Well, a character's gender can't simply be based on looks.
That got me thinking about what you guys see Frisk as gender-wise! I like to think of Frisk as either a girlish boy, a boyish girl, or both. Game seems to make it pretty clear Frisk is non-binary. I think the game aimed to let you project whatever gender you want into Frisk, because this way you can name your player character anything. The Player, Chara and Frisk are all separate people, each with their own weight on the plot.
