When the audience finally gets a good look at a fantastical creature in The Lighthouse , director Robert Eggers has already been playing mind tricks to the point where it's impossible to tell whether the figure is a hallucinatory product of delusion or truly involves mystical forces messing with the minds of wickies Ephraim Winslow Robert Pattinson and Thomas Wake Willem Dafoe. What's immediately clear, however, is that this mermaid, portrayed by Valeriia Karaman, which appears to Pattinson's Ephraim is not cut from the same cloth as, say, Daryl Hannah in Splash. For one, her, uh, sexual organ is plainly visible and extremely large. Yes, one of the most shocking parts of The Lighthouse involves a big mermaid vagina. But the shark vagina had some things about it that look slightly human. The film's makeup effects team, comprised of Kathy Tse and Adrian Morot, built the prosthetic for Karaman's mermaid, who Ephraim spots near the rocky coast in the midst of a raging storm that keeps him and Dafoe's Thomas imprisoned on the tiny island where the lighthouse sits.

Robert Eggers' first period horror fantasia, The Witch , is pretty upfront about what terrors are befalling its Puritan family. There's a witch in the woods and Satan's in the barn, having taken the form of a goat named Black Phillip. But his follow-up, The Lighthouse , is a film that holds its secrets close. On the surface, it's a fairly simple story. Soon, madness sets in, thanks to a toxic combination of personal grievances, sexual frustration, and possibly supernatural meddling.
Director Robert Eggers Breaks Down the Mysteries of 'The Lighthouse'
Robert Eggers's black and white film about two lighthouse keepers in the late 19th century terrorizes the senses for nearly two hours. And while The Lighthouse has been lauded by critics across the board and currently named Esquire's best movie of the year , it's also absolutely bananas. This is in no small part due to Robert Pattinson's violent treatment of his penis.
Mary, the gentle, devout 51-year-old Catholic mother of four urged her co-worker, Nicholas Gutierrez, 19, to change his gay lifestyle. Infuriated by this, as he later told police, he allegedly beat, stabbed and strangled her to death and then stuffed her mangled body in a crawl space in his apartment, located above a Chicago funeral home, where they both worked. I know about Mary Stachowicz, not from the Internet, but personally, because Mary was my secretary at the parish where I was pastor before I was named a Bishop. She worked part time at the funeral home and part time at the parish.
